Guest staying at ClinkNOORD last month were lucky enough to catch this exclusive, intimate performance from Sunset Sons.

Fresh off their tour with Imagine Dragons, the guys popped in to play at our very own ZincBAR. Amazing show, buzzing guests – what a night!

Check out the video to see what went down …

And here’s are the seven things you need to know to get up to speed with this foursome carving their way into the mainstream.

1. Hossegor – Where it all started

A shared love of surfing brought the boys together in Hossegor, South of France. Lead singer, Rory Williams, worked in bar washing dishes. This was the very same bar where Jed, now the band’s drummer, listened to him crooning cover songs on the piano. The seed was sown and the boys got a band together with friends Robin Windram (guitar) and Pete Harper (Bass).

2. Kings of the Après Ski

To fund summers catching waves the band would make a beeline for the Alps in the winter to play the jumping après-ski scene. The boys would drive from resort to resort on some fairly sketchy mountain roads (you can thank your lucky stars that they’re still with us!) Playing nine two hour shows every week meant that the Sunset Sons set got pretty damn slick.

3. They played pranks on Imagine Dragons

The band went on a 36 date arena tour supporting Imagine Dragons, playing to some pretty big crowds across Europe. Words like ‘best support band ever’ were flying around on social media. There were plenty of hijinks on the road between the two bands, some of which you can catch over on the Sunset Sons Instagram

4. You’ll be singing tunes from their debut album all summer

Their new album ‘Very Rarely Say Die’ was recorded all around the world; from a little backyard studio in Bayonne, to an all singing-all-dancing set up in Nashville. Big choruses and catchy guitar riffs combine with the boys’ super laidback approach to create an album that’s made to be performed live.

5. They used be called ‘The Cheerleaders’

Sunset Sons started life as a cover band called ‘The Cheerleaders.’ When the guys first started playing together they decamped from Hossegor to Newcastle, stayed with Jed’s folks and learned 60 covers. From Queens of the Stone Age, to Kings of Leon, to The Beatles, to Kanye West – crowds always loved the eclectic selection of tunes they had down.

6. There’s a funny story about underpants

During their early days playing together, lead singer Rory was left to negotiate their fee for a show at Loop Bar in Tignes in the French Alps. At the time, he was low on pants. He mentioned this to the bar owner. He struck a deal that got the band half Loop branded pants and half cash. Needless to say, the rest of the boys weren’t too impressed!

7. They’re coming to play @ ClinkNOORD!
