With its long-standing traditions, quaint markets and snow-topped roofs, Europe is a magical place to be at Christmas time. There’s something special about every city but we reckon Amsterdam is once of the best places to find a good dose of yuletide cheer. Here’s a few of our favourite things to check out in Amsterdam this festive season:
Set in the Amsterdam’s Westerpark’s beautiful Westergasfabriek building on 4th December, Kerstfair Markt is the perfect arty market to get you in the festive mood. Find Christmas themed workshops, art and design, winter fashion, fun and games for the younger ones or ones young at heart (and even massage parlours for the adults after a long day of cycling and shopping!) There will be live music throughout the day and lots of festive treats from the many market stalls.
Do you love local markets and hunting for a bargain? Then IJ-Hallen Flea Market on 10th and 11th December is for you. Held once every month in the old NDSM shipping yards, the flea market is packed to the brim with everything and anything you might be looking for including used clothing, shoes, toys, tools, antiques and even kitchen sinks – all going for a song! You might have to rummage through a fair bit of junk to find the gems – but that’s the fun of it all! Located at NDSM, the flea market is only a 5 minute cycle ride from ClinkNOORD – a perfect purse-friendly outing for anyone staying at the hostel!
Coming to the Royal Theatre Carré Amsterdam between 22nd December and 8th January is the World Christmas Circus, featuring the crème de la crème of the circus world. The show has been running since 1887 and features only the best acts that the world has to offer today. See contortionists, the best clown shows, horse shows, trapeze artists, acrobats and more in this once in a lifetime show. Tickets are around €15-€59 per person and are available via the World Christmas Circus website.
Amsterdam never fails to impress with the food it has on offer and we love how passionate Netherlanders are about their produce. The NeighbourFood Market brings together the best baristas, famous chefs, sausage makers, sandwich superheroes, cheese master-crafters, bakers, butchers and the most talented in the world of food from Amsterdam. Enjoy local cuisine on long shared tables with other patrons and, if you can, bring your own plate a cutlery to make things easier for the local producers. The market is held at Westergas in Amsterdam every month, but the venue can change depending on the weather.
