With its long-standing traditions, quaint markets and snow-topped roofs, Europe is a magical place to be at Christmas time. There’s something special about every city but we reckon Amsterdam is once of the best places to find a good dose of yuletide cheer. Here’s a few of our favourite things to check out in Amsterdam this festive season:

1. IJ-Hallen – Amsterdam Noord

Do you love local markets and hunting for a bargain? Then IJ-Hallen Flea Market is for you. Held on a number of days through November & December in the old NDSM shipping yards, the flea market is packed to the brim with everything and anything you might be looking for including used clothing, shoes, toys, tools, antiques and even kitchen sinks – all going for a song! You might have to rummage through a fair bit of junk to find the gems – but that’s the fun of it all! Located at NDSM, the flea market is only a 5 minute cycle ride from ClinkNOORD – a perfect purse-friendly outing for anyone staying at the hostel!

Amsterdam Light Festival

From 2nd December to 23rd January, Amsterdam will be lit up all over the city centre. The festival will be celebrating its 10 year jubilee, which is also this year’s theme. You can expect 30 different pieces all around the city designed and curated by international and national artists. The installations light up every day from 5 PM to 11 PM and are in the open air so it’s basically free for everyone. However, they do offer guided tours, if you’re looking to get the whole cultural experience, which we do recommend ourselves!

Amsterdam during the winter months is absolutely stunning. With Christmas trees, decorations and lights adorning the city the whole place feels like a fairy tale. Yes the weather can be a little temperamental but us Clinkers are hardy folk.
