We’re sure you don’t need convincing … but in case you do, here’s our seven reasons why you have to simply HAVE to visit Amsterdam this summer!

1. Alfresco drinking and dining is BIG

We won’t lie to you, Amsterdam isn’t known for being the sunniest city on the planet. However, when the sun comes out the Dutch like to be able to soak up the rays whilst enjoying a cold drink or a bite to eat. As such, you’ll find plenty of sunny terraces to do just that. Our favourite is Pllek’s manmade beach, sitting right on the banks of the IJ River in Amsterdam Noord.

2. There’s no shortage of festivals

If you like to party, then Amsterdam isn’t going to disappoint. The city hosts over 300 festival each year, many of which happen over the summer months. There’s something for everyone – from dance, to live music to food. Check out what’s on.

3. Barbecues are welcome

What better way to spend a summer’s day than sitting in a park with friends, drinking a cider or two and listening to the sound of sausages sizzling on the barbecue? Luckily, several of Amsterdam’s parks are barbecue friendly so you’re welcome to stoke those coals and get cooking! Make sure to check out where to head here.

4. There’s free theatre – in a park!

Throughout the whole summer you can catch live performances of theatre, dance, music, cabaret – and more – and the open air theatre in Vondelpark. Best of all, it’s completely free – although donations are enthusiastically welcomed! Check out their website for details.

5. You can hit the beach!

Amsterdam may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of beach holidays, but don’t let that put you off. Just half an hour from the city centre by train you’ll find a rather nice beach where you can get your tan on, jump on a jet ski or just chill out in one of the many beach bars and cafes.

6. You can  watch a movie – outside!

As the night’s get warmer, cinema screens begin to pop up outside. Take in a classic movie on a rooftop or by the river-bank – the choice is yours!

7. Pride is everywhere!

Amsterdam is well known for its open and inclusive attitude. But in the summer months, the city becomes even brighter and bolder as the streets come to life to celebrate LGBT rights during Gay Pride. The atmosphere is buzzing and it’s a great time to visit! Check the Pride website to find out about the various events.
