Some people really enjoy being scared. I have to say I am not a big fun of spooky places and I think it is all about mind tricks… but I am a bit of a chicken, truth be said. Anyway, I have been digging around to find 3 scary spots that guests, friends and fellow travellers have recommended to me :)
Greenwich Foot Tunnel: they say that if you ever find yourself in the tunnels, you will live quite a deeply unsettling experience. Even worse, an experience that will leave you gasping for the safety of the ground above. Built in 1902 the tunnel is 370 metres long and 15 metres deep. The echoes created by the sounds of fellow walkers entering the tunnel make for a very eerie experience. How to get there? Access the tunnel via Cutty Sark Gardens.
Hunterian Museum: (Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE) Bottled human foetuses, preserved monkey heads and misshapen skeletons are some of the creepy specimens that famed Georgian surgeon Sir John Hunter (considered to be the father of scientific surgery) collected to research disease – and they are all on display here at the Royal College of Surgeons museum. If deformed bodies and organs don’t scare you, the early failed attempts at transplants won’t let you indifferent.
City of London Cemetery: (Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park, London, E12 5DQ) Since the mid 1970s locals have complainted about a brilliant orange light emanating from one of the tombstones in the western section of the City of London Cemetery in Wanstead. Despite repeated attempts, investigators have been unable to find any light source outside the graveyard that could account for the phenomenon. Maybe tonight is the night? Access the cemetery via Aldersbrook Road.
