As ClinkNOORD opens its doors, staff at the hostel have shared a few of their favourite places to eat, drink and entertain themselves in the Noord neighbourhood. There’s plenty to get you started here and, what’s more, all these venues are featured on our brand spanking new Amsterdam maps which you can pick up at the hostel. Go forth and explore Noord!
1. The Tol Huis Tuin
The Tol Huis Tuin is the former workers’ cantina of SHELL HQ. It’s recently been transformed into a vibrant, multi-functional event space complete with gallery, garden, music hall and café /restaurant. It’s got it all, really! We love their eclectic range of small dishes – order a selection and while away the hours with a bunch of friends. THT takes the summer seriously too. On hot days they extend the terrace downstairs and let the chilled tunes flow out. We’re hoping for an Indian summer so we can enjoy the sweet summer vibes right into September.
Tolhuisweg 5
Open every day from 10am. Lunch is served from 11am to 4pm. Dinner is from 5.30pm to 10pm
A newbie on the Noord bloc, Rolling Rock Kitchen is bringing its own brand of rock n’ roll cool to the Northern Soul of Amsterdam. Perched on the edge of the River IJ, with a sprawling terrace, this is a great spot to enjoy a cold beer and catch a few rays. The interior is peppered with rock n’roll paraphernalia – classic guitars, microphones gig posters and the like – so you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled into the Stones’ recording studio. If you’re thinking of throwing a party here then you’re also in luck because the space can be rented for a good ol’ fashioned shindig.
Distelweg 113, 1031 HD
Open every day 11am – 1am
Café de Ceuval makes being ‘green’ seriously cool. This urban retreat, adjacent to the van Hasselt kanaal just off the river IJ, is a creative and social enterprise well on its way to achieving its goal of becoming fully self-sufficient. Constructed using a mixture of recycled materials, the building and its surrounding decking area have an organic feel, almost like they’ve always belonged there. Café de Ceuval serves up tasty and affordable food using locally produced ingredients. Down the line you’ll even be able to sample fare from their very own rooftop farm! Musical entertainment and events also run regularly so you can always be sure to find something interesting going on at Café de Ceuval.
Korte Papaverweg 4, 1032 KB
Mon-Thu 12pm – 12am Fri – Sat 12pm-2am
4. Café Modern
Café Modern is one of those venues that inhabits an old building (a former bank) whilst managing to feel very fresh and up-to-date. A mixture of vintage finds and classic design pieces make up the interior, creating a hip yet cosy aesthetic. The original features, like the restrooms which are located in the former safes of the bank, are a smiling nod to the building’s original purpose. Café Modern, like many good Amsterdam restaurant of late, operates a ‘Table d’Hote’ whereby everyone orders from the same small fixed menu. Here, it’s a four-course offering. Ingredients are very fresh and always seasonal. Café Modern is a good bet if you’re in the mood for a leisurely dinner with friends or a romantic night out.
Meidoornweg 2, 1031 GG
Mon-Tue 7pm-1am Wed-Sat 12pm-3pm, 7pm-1am
Oedipus Brewing are a group of friends who share a passion for great beer. They began brewing because they wanted to create something exciting and tasty. Inventiveness is key when it comes to concocting their recipes and they’re always conscious of using the best ingredients they can lay their hands on. They seem to have achieved their mission and are well on their way to sharing their beer with the world. They’ve got their very own ‘Taproom’ in Amsterdam Noord where they host various events, tastings and festivals. Cheers to that.
Gedempt Hamerkanaal 85, 1021
Friday 3pm – 9pm Saturday 2pm – 9pm
Check the event page for one-off events, tastings and festivals.
We featured Noorderlicht in our Cheap Eats Amsterdam guide but it’s a real local favourite in Noord so we had to give it a spot here. Built inside an old greenhouse, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled upon a futuristic hippy hideout. Once inside, however, you’ll feel totally at home. Brightly coloured chairs and tables dotted with wild flowers happily welcome you to sit down. The café places a strong focus on serving seasonal, ethically sourced food and drink but luckily the prices remain very reasonable. Noorderlicht is the cultural hub of the community of artists who live and work at the NDSM Werf. Round its campfire in the evenings you’ll find live music and DJ’s and the building is shrouded in beautiful ambient lighting. This place is almost too good to be real. But it’s there. Trust us.
NDSM Plein 102, 1033 WB
