What do backpackers take with them when travelling? It’s an age old question that we tried to answer with our tongue-in-cheek article stereotyping backpackers, but now we’re asking you – what are your travel essentials?

We’re running a competition to shed light on what travellers consider their most treasured possessions and what they can’t bear to leave the hostel without. The winner will receive a Free 2 Night Stay in a private room at the Clink Hostel of their choice – that includes our London hostels Clink78, Clink261 and our Amsterdam hostel ClinkNOORD.

Entry to the competition is simple:

  • Gather together your knick-knacks, travel essentials and anything in between
  • Arrange them however you like
  • Take a photograph
  • Post it on Twitter or Instagram, tag @clinkhostels and include the hashtag #ClinkWIYB
  • The winner will be chosen at random

To help inspire you, we’ve asked a collection of our favourite bloggers to create their own flat lay photographs. Check them out below!

Looking at my flat lay after photographing it, I realise how little of my luggage I class as essential. I find any extra weight is just an extra nuisance, and I figure anything aside from the five items you see in the picture I can pick up pretty cheap in a market somewhere in Europe.

Whilst I spend most of my travels trying to minimise my luggage, the one item I don’t mind picking up everywhere I go is a map. They are often marked with places I visited and can be great to recall memories when back home!

As well as maps, I carry a leather notebook. My notebook is currently full of notes on Darija (the version of Arabic spoken in Morocco) as I was based there for the past couple of months and no matter what country I visit, learning the local language is always one of my priorities.

But the cat has stolen the show, and whilst this particular cat isn’t part of my travels, I seem to befriend stray animals wherever I go in the world, so it seemed fitting that she should crash my flat lay photoshoot!

What’s in my bag?

  • MacBook Pro (with stickers from my favourite brands and hostels)
  • iPhone 5
  • Sony a5000
  • Passport
  • Leather notebook
  • Map of Iceland
  • Foxglove (the stray cat who had found a home in the alley outside my friend’s house in Tamraght, Morocco)

Unlike the name of my blog suggests, I do pack a little bit more than just my passport and a toothbrush. Having said that, I do travel light.

As long as I have my wallet, passport and my phone, I am good to go. Anything else I can buy when I am at my holiday destination.

What’s in my bag?

  • Canon SLR Camera

  • Passport
  • Wallet
  • Chap stick

It comes as no surprise from what you’ll find in my bag that I am indeed the ‘handsome travel blogger.’

You could argue that the items reveal I am vain, a ‘metrosexual’ and a complete narcissist. But I claim it’s a part of who I am and you love me for it.

Handsome travel bloggers couldn’t live without the key items I’ve listed below. Let’s face it – I have got to look good for fellow travellers on the road without a hair out of place and, of course, for the thousands of Facebook photos I am tagged in.

  • Hair straighteners
  • Headache tablets
  • Glasses
  • MacBook
  • Notebook
  • Pen
  • Memory cards
