Londoners are lucky to have a whole bunch of museums that they can walk straight into – completely free of charge. And thankfully, that goes for visitors too! If you’re into art, science, history – or if you’d just like to include a bit of culture into your visit – then there’s plenty on offer.

London Museums National History Museum

  • The Natural History Museum collection includes artefacts, skeletons and fossils from an incredible 80 million specimens spanning billions of years.
  • Explore the expertly curated British Museum with exhibitions from across the globe including Egyptian sarcophaguses and Japanese Samurai armour. It’s just around the corner from Clink, too.
  • The Science Museum: With loads of interactive exhibitions and events, science really comes to life!
  • The V&A houses a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects from the world of art and design. It’s always worth checking their special paid exhibitions too like the recent ‘David Bowie is’ retrospective, and ‘Savage Beauty’, celebrating the work of Alexander McQueen.

  • If you want to brush up on your British history, the Museum of London paints a picture of this vibrant city, from prehistoric to modern times.
  • The Imperial War Museum documents the stories of people who’s lives have been touched by war. A definite must for history buffs.

London Galleries

If you’re an art lover, then you’ll find yourself at home in London. The city is a hotbed of creativity and there’s plenty of galleries to choose from. From Turner to Hirst, London’s galleries have got you covered. Most of them have free admission too, so even if you’re on a tight budget you can still marvel at the masterpieces on a show!

  • At The National Gallery you’ll be able to admire paintings from Western Europe, with work from Cézanne and Van Gough amongst many others.
  • Over the years the Gagosian Gallery has exhibited big names like Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Roy Lichtenstein. All art is for sale, although if you’re on a travellers budget we have a feeling that, like us, you’ll just be there for the show!
  • At The National Portrait Gallery where you’ll find paintings and photographic portraits of British nobility and luminaries such as William Shakespeare.
  • The Tate Modern is jam-packed with modern and contemporary art. Housed in the former Bankside Power Station, the incredible Turbine hall runs the entire length of the building.
