Particularly in Amsterdam, the friendly Dutch capital makes it a fun, energetic place to party through to the early hours of the morning and celebrate this occasion in true style. Now New Year’s may be a little different this year with the prospect of COVID restrictions staying in place (you can view the current restrictions here) but there’s still something for everyone to enjoy in Amsterdam this New Year’s Eve. Read on to check out our top picks and remember to make sure you have a face mask for any public transport you hop on as there is a hefty fine if you don’t.

Bars and Parties

With everything from black tie events to warehouse raves and street parties, revellers are spoilt for choice when it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam. The Dutch capital is renowned for its world-famous nightlife and party scene. From glitzy and exclusive bars to grungy raves, the city is overflowing with places to party! Be warned though, clubbing on NYE in Amsterdam can be an expensive affair. So with that in mind, we’ve shortlisted some nights that we think are worth every penny!

Delirium

Delirium, best known as the ‘place to beer’ and they definitely know how to throw a party. Located next to Central Station, you won’t have to look far to find them. Along with a huge selection of beers they also have a heated outdoor terrace with an amazing view of the river. With night DJ’s ready, the party will go on long past the clock has struck for the New Year so you can party your way into 2022. Tickets available here.

Diamonds Are Forever

Diamonds Are Forever at the DoubleTree is the place for you if you want the elegant, black tie affair and to enter the New Year in sparkles. With a panoramic view of the city and a live DJ set, James Bond would be jealous. Again, it’s located right next to the station, so you won’t have to weave your way through the oncoming cyclist traffic that fills the streets of Amsterdam. Buy your tickets here.

Street Parties and Firework displays

If clubbing isn’t your thing or if you prefer a more spontaneous evening, why not head down to one of Amsterdam’s main squares (Dam Square, Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt, Leidseplein) and soak up the madness! You’ll find legions of celebratory Amsterdammers huddling together to bring in the New Year, along with beer tents, food stalls, live music and lots of fireworks.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds but are still keen to catch a glimpse of some fireworks, then grab a hot chocolate or a glass of mulled wine and head to the banks of the river Amstel. From here you can see almost all the fireworks above the city. The beautiful Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) is one of the best spots for a more relaxing view. Currently COVID-19 restrictions prohibit fireworks but these restrictions are due to change on the 4th December!

In need of a place to warm up? Here’s our 7 favourite cosy bars to visit in Amsterdam this winter!

Daytime Festivities

Sightseeing during the day

From weird and wonderful museums to incredible architecture, you’ll certainly find something to do before the evening activities begin. There’s also the winter festival with a multitude of light displays and ice rinks to cool down on before New Year’s Eve really heats up. Whilst you’re there, seek out the Dutch tradition Oliebollen and champagne, there will be carts up and down the streets selling them and they are a must try in our eyes!

To really learn the tales of the Dutch capital, we recommend that you attend a free (yes, FREE) walking tour before the clock strikes twelve. The tour will help you get your bearings in this often-confusing city, and allow you to make the most of your stay.

Things to remember…

Amsterdam public transportation stops at around 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and only limited bus services resume around midnight. Fortunately, the ferry from Amsterdam’s Centraal to ‘Veer Buiksloterweg’ runs every 7 minutes (15 minutes during the night) throughout NYE and only takes 3 minutes. From the boat, ClinkNOORD is only 400m away.
