London boasts plenty of high street shops, but for an authentic shopping experience you’ll want to hit the marketplace. There are loads of markets to choose from, from food markets to antiques and craft fairs, so there is bound to be something that caters to your tastes. Even if you don’t buy anything, London markets are full of life and character, so you can just browse, soak up the atmosphere and still have a great day out.

1. Borough Market

Perhaps London’s most renowned market, Borough Market offers an eclectic range of stalls selling the best of British and international produce. You could easily spend most of the day simply wandering around sampling delicious meats, cheeses and rare treats from around the world. It’s also open six days a week, all year round!

2. Covent Garden Market

Covent Garden Market is one of London’s most popular shopping and entertainment destinations. 16. Chatsworth Road Market

Chatsworth Road Market is a classic London locals market; a place to meet people and socialise as you shop. Legend has it that this is the market where British TV icon and business mogul Sir Alan Sugar first cut his teeth in the business world selling shampoo from his stall. The market itself has a real medley of stalls, selling everything from vintage clothing and accessories to handmade baked goods and fresh cooked street food, and is also on a high street full of interesting, independently owned shops.

17. Bermondsey Square Antiques Market

Bermondsey Square is full of characters; it’s the kind of market where you’re likely to see both a Cockney gent and an upper-class, ageing expert flogging their wares on the same street. The distinctively bustling market is famous for its selection of antiques stalls, where you will mostly find antique silverware, teapots, decorative boxes and jewellery. The dedicated merchants open their stalls every Friday at 6am, no matter what the weather is like.
