20 Things to Do at Night in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city that comes alive at night. When the stars come out, make sure you get out and explore all that the magical Amsterdam nightlife has to offer!

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of the most interesting things you can do at night in Amsterdam!

Things to Do at Night in Amsterdam

1. See the city light up

Amsterdam is beautiful by day, but at night, when the sun goes down, the magic really starts to happen. Stroll along the city’s cobbled canal-side streets, lit up with romantic street lights, and soak in the romance of it all. If you’re lucky, the Amsterdam Light Festival might be in town too. During the city’s darkest days, a host of innovative light installations brighten up the canals and streets. Check out the website for all the routes you can take.

2. Soak up some culture

Amsterdam’s famous ‘Concertgebouw’ is internationally renowned for its exceptional acoustics, making it one of the city’s great prides. The concert hall, designed by A.L van Gendt, first opened in 1881 and has been sympathetically renovated over the years. Even if you’re not a music aficionado, it’s worth going along to experience a night of top quality performances in a stunning setting. Bear in mind that the Concertgebouw is one of the most-visited concert halls in the world, so it’s best to book in advance if you’re planning on going.

3. Dance Dance Dance!

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is the place to be for Electronic Dance Music (EDM). If dance music is your thing, then there’s no better place to dance the night away. You’ll find many of the world’s top DJ’s (many of whom are Dutch) busting out tune after tune at mega clubs open until the sun comes up. With a host of venues on offer – from Escape to Warehouse Elementenstraat– you’ll never be short of choice on where to spend your night.

4. Get lost in the Red Light District

Everyone has their own ideas about what to expect when they visit the Red Light District (and it’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea!), but if you’re in Amsterdam, it’s definitely worth an evening visit. When it gets dark, the neon lights come up, illuminating ladies in street-side windows, plying their trade. The atmosphere feels more carnival-like than seedy though, with crowded bars, clubs and ‘adults only shops. To escape the rabble, you can always duck down a side street and into one of the city’s many Asian restaurants.

5. Catch some live music

Whilst Amsterdam is probably more well-known for its EDM scene, there are some incredible live music venues where you can catch a well-known act or an up-and-coming band. Paradiso is a former church-turned music venue. With its big stained glass windows behind the band and two balconies overlooking the crowds below, it’s an amazing setting to soak up the sounds of some great music. Make sure to also check out the smaller room upstairs which hosts up-and-coming or independent acts. Melkweg (meaning ‘Milky way’) is another live music favourite. Once a dairy factory, the venue was taken over by a theatre collective in 1970. Now, you’ll find two concert halls showcasing anything from rock to reggae and hip-hop acts along with a café, cinema, photography gallery and theatre.

6. Indulge in the spirits at Café de Dokter

If you’re looking to experience a little of the history of Amsterdam without trekking around too many museums, then head to Café de Dokter. This minuscule bar was founded in 1798 by a Dutch surgeon who worked at the former Binnengasthuis hospital nearby. For good quality spirits, it’s one of the best places in central Amsterdam. With the vintage interior still intact and classic jazz played all day long, you can feel the city’s past in every corner of Café de Dokter.

7. Seek out a secret bar

Amsterdam might feel like a city with no secrets left, but look a little closer and you’ll uncover a few hidden gems. Door 74 is one of the city’s original speakeasy-style bars, tucked away behind an unmarked door and serving top-tier cocktails in a cosy, dimly lit setting. Craving a burger with a twist? The Butcher might seem like your standard burger joint, but at their Albert Cuyp spot in De Pijp, there’s a secret kitchen hidden behind a silver door. Book ahead, grab the password, and you’ll be led into a grown-up playground of velvet seats, moody lighting, and next-level drinks.

8. Take in the views at A’DAM Tower

Twinkle twinkle little star, where will you find Amsterdam’s highest bar? Up the A’DAM Tower of course! Just next to ClinkNOORD, MA’DAM sky bar, is the place to head for incredible views of the city after dark. Grab a cocktail and watch the lights sparkle across the city. The bar operates a no-reservations policy and their only rule if you want to swing by for drinks? Show up thirsty!

9. Visit the city’s museums by night

If culture by night is your thing, then you should take advantage of the fact that quite a few of the best museums in Amsterdam stay open late at the weekend. The Van Gogh Museum and The Stedelijk Museum are open until 9pm on Friday. The Eye Film Museum (just one-minute walk from ClinkNOORD) is open until 12am every day of the week. If you happen to be visiting in November, Amsterdam really ups the cultural ante with ‘Museum Night.’ On the first Saturday of the month, around 50 museums open their doors from 7pm to 2am. With special events, concerts, tours and performances it’s a night not to be missed. Oh, and there’s plenty of delicious food and drinks to keep you going all night long!

10. Go for a late night cycle

Cycling is one of the best ways to explore Amsterdam, and it’s just as good after dark. The streets are quieter, the canals are calm and the city takes on a whole new feel. Ride past softly lit bridges, cruise through quiet neighbourhoods and enjoy a slower pace of sightseeing. You can book a bike through our website when reserving your stay or hire one nearby. Just make sure you’ve got lights and something to snack on if you’re out for a while.

Things to Do at Night in Amsterdam as a Couple

11. Cruise the canals on a private tour

There’s something special about seeing Amsterdam from the water, especially when it’s just the two of you. A private canal cruise is a peaceful, romantic way to take in the city lights after dark. Companies like Boat Boys offer intimate evening tours where you can sit back, relax and take in the views. Bring a blanket, your favourite drinks and watch the reflections dance on the water as you float past bridges and gabled buildings. A quiet cruise like this is the perfect way to start or end an evening together.

12. Wander the city hand in hand

Evening strolls in Amsterdam are underrated. The streets quiet down, the canals shimmer under the streetlights and the city feels like it’s all yours. Walk through Jordaan or De Pijp, cross a few bridges or just get pleasantly lost. No plans needed, just comfy shoes and good company. Stop for an ice cream or a late-night snack along the way and enjoy the slower pace. The city has a different energy at night, softer and more relaxed. It is the perfect time to wander without a map and see where the night takes you. You might stumble across a quiet square, a canal you have never noticed before or a cosy bar still serving.

13. Watch a film at Pathé Tuschinski

A date night spot with serious wow factor. Pathé Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski isn’t just a cinema, it’s a full-on Art Deco masterpiece. Think velvet seats, golden lights and big-screen magic. Book a double seat, grab some popcorn and settle in for a film with a side of old-school glamour. Even the foyer is worth a moment, with stained glass, plush carpets and chandeliers that feel more theatre than cinema. They screen a mix of big blockbusters and indie gems, so there’s always something worth watching. For a proper treat, book a screening in the main hall. It feels like stepping into a film yourself.

14. Laugh together at a live comedy show

Whether it’s your first date or your hundredth, laughing together is always a win. Amsterdam’s comedy scene is brilliant, with English-language shows at places like Boom Chicago and Comedy Café Amsterdam. Expect stand-up, improv, and a good mix of local and international talent. The atmosphere is fun and informal, with table service so you can enjoy drinks while you watch. It’s a great way to break the ice or just end the day with something light-hearted. Check the listings in advance, as special guests and themed nights are common.

15. Catch a show at the theatre

For something a bit different, head to the theatre. DeLaMar Theatre is right in the heart of Amsterdam and hosts a mix of musicals, plays and comedy performances in a stylish setting. It stays open late on both weekdays and weekends, making it a great shout for a proper night out after dinner or drinks. The building itself is worth a visit, with its elegant interior and cosy bar area for a pre-show drink. Many performances are accessible to international audiences, with subtitles or shows in English. It’s a relaxed but memorable way to spend the evening together.

16. Sip cocktails at a bar

Bar Mokum and Super Lyan are two favourites, mixing up classic and creative drinks in low-lit settings. Perfect for date night chats and feeling a bit fancy. The bartenders know their stuff, so don’t be shy about asking for a recommendation. It’s the kind of night that starts with one drink and turns into a few more without even noticing. Just remember to book ahead if you can, as these spots tend to fill up quickly.

17. Watch the sunset at Pllek

Catch the free ferry from Central Station to Amsterdam Noord and head to Pllek, a vibrant urban beach at the NDSM Wharf. With its sandy waterfront, lounge chairs, and panoramic views over the IJ River, it’s an ideal spot to relax and watch the sunset. Grab a drink, kick off your shoes, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere as the sky turns shades of orange and pink.

18. Visit a board game café

For something low-key but fun, head to a board game café like TonTon Club in Amsterdam. This retro-style spot mixes arcade games, board games and snacks in a lively, laid-back setting. Pick a game, grab a drink and enjoy a bit of friendly competition with your other half. It is the kind of date that keeps things relaxed but still full of laughs. You can team up or going head-to-head. Either way it’s a fun way to spend quality time together without the usual night-out routine. Add in a round of pinball or air hockey and see who comes out on top.

19. Relax at a rooftop lounge

See the city from a different angle with drinks and skyline views. Amsterdam has some brilliant rooftop spots, and LuminAir and REM Amsterdam are two of the best for couples looking to spend a memorable evening together. LuminAir is a sleek, modern sky bar with a rooftop terrace, and stays open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday, making it a great choice for a late night. REM Amsterdam is set on a floating platform with views over the IJ river and has a more laid-back vibe. It stays open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Both are perfect for a romantic night out. You can sip cocktails, share small plates or simply enjoying the view as the city sparkles around you.

20. Eat by the canal

When in Amsterdam, you’ve got to have a meal or drink by the water at least once. A canal-side table, good food and a relaxed atmosphere are all you need for a memorable evening. Café ‘t Smalle is a local gem in the Jordaan, with a beautiful wooden terrace right on the canal and an old-world charm that makes it feel instantly welcoming. It’s more casual than fine dining, but that’s part of the appeal. Think simple, hearty dishes, candlelight and a great selection of local beers and wine. Inside, the space is cosy and full of character, perfect if the weather takes a turn. On weekends, it stays open as late as 1am, so you can linger over drinks and soak up the peaceful vibe. It’s an easy-going but quietly romantic spot to end the day together.

Amsterdam Tulip Festival 2025

The Amsterdam Tulip Festival is the ultimate celebration of spring in Holland. Thousands of tulips bloom in more than 85 locations across the city and its outskirts, bringing Amsterdam to life with their incredible beauty and colour – and Amsterdam Tulip Festival 2025 is no exception.

Imported to Holland in the sixteenth century from the Ottoman Empire, tulips have grown to become one of the most enduring symbols of the Netherlands. So much so, there is now an annual festival celebrating the bloom.

Want to know more about the Amsterdam Tulip Festival and what this year has in store? Then read on to find out what’s on offer at the Amsterdam Tulip Festival 2025.

Keukenhof tulip gardens, Amsterdam

Why are Tulips popular in the Netherlands?

Tulips are a part of Dutch culture and have been for centuries. In the 17th century, tulips were incredibly popular in the Netherlands, due to their brilliant colours and the fact that they could be grown easily in the Dutch climate. The popularity of tulips in the Netherlands was so great that the tulip market became an important economic centre in Amsterdam, and a symbol of the Dutch economy.

In 1637, the price of tulip bulbs skyrocketed and then crashed, causing the Dutch tulip market to collapse. This event, known as Tulip Mania, is still remembered today, and tulips are seen as a symbol of Dutch culture and history.

Today, tulips are still a major part of Dutch culture, and Amsterdam is one of the best places to see them. The city is home to several beautiful tulip gardens, and there are numerous tulip events throughout the year, including the Tulip Festival.

When is the Tulip Festival in Amsterdam?

The annual Amsterdam Tulip Festival officially runs from the 20th March to the 11th May 2025. Holland’s long spring season with its cool nights provide ideal conditions for tulip growing, so if you’re hoping to see tulips in Amsterdam at their most bright and beautiful, it’s a good idea to plan your visit during this time. And if you’re in Amsterdam on April 26th, even better – this is when King’s Day will be celebrated this year (it’s usually celebrated on the 27th, but due to the tradition of not celebrating on Sundays, the festivities have been moved to the 26th). Read our guide on King’s Day in Amsterdam for more information.

Can you bring Tulips back from Amsterdam?

If you’re looking to bring tulip bulbs back from Amsterdam to your home country, we would advise you to check your countries’ website for environmental protection before you travel.

Generally, though, flower bulbs staying within the European community can be exported throughout Europe without any issues. If you’re travelling to countries outside of the EU like the USA or Canada, bulbs must have been checked by officers in the Netherlands to ensure they are thoroughly cleaned and free from soil. These bulbs are sealed and given a special ‘health certificate’ which should enable you to clear customs back home.

Where is the Tulip Festival in Amsterdam?

The Amsterdam Tulip Festival is a city-wide event, with a chance to see beautiful tulips blooming at over 85 locations across Amsterdam. All displays in public areas such as the ones in front of the Rijksmuseum and the EYE Film Museum next to ClinkNOORD are free to enjoy, but there are also some affordable events and activities to enjoy throughout the city during the festival.

Now you know a little bit more about Tulips in Amsterdam, we’re going to tell you about some of our favourite tulip-related activities in the city. Some of these are specifically related to the Amsterdam Tulip Festival in the spring, others you can happily do all year round.

Things to do during the Amsterdam Tulip Festival

1. Tour the colourful displays throughout the city

See Amsterdam come to life in the spring as over 85 colourful displays of tulips pop up all over the city

If you’re in the city during April, then you’ll want to put at least one day aside to tour the magnificent blooms on display as part of the Amsterdam Tulip Festival.

Over 85 venues throughout the city participate in the festival. From museums, to hotels, parks and private residences, each venue provides a unique backdrop for the colourful blooms.

If you’re staying with us at Clink, check out flower displays outside the EYE Film Museum on the edge of the IJ River as your first stop. Afterwards, jump on the ferry and explore some of the displays in the city centre. End your tour in the gorgeous green space of Vondelpark. If the weather is good, why not bring a picnic and spend the afternoon soaking up all the beauty? Check out the full list of participating locations here.

Displays in public locations can be viewed at any time for free. For museums or private residences, please check individual websites.

The journey from Amsterdam to Keukenhof takes around one hour by bus.

3. Buy some blooms

Whether you’re visiting in the spring or not, there will always be an opportunity to buy some kind of blooms in Amsterdam!

If you’re looking to buy tulips in Amsterdam, there are plenty of places to go. Maybe you’re staying in an apartment with friends and you’d like to treat them to a nice bunch of flowers for letting you stay? Or perhaps you’d like to take some tulip bulbs back to your own country to plant them in your garden? The Amsterdam Flower Market is perhaps the most famous place to buy tulips in Amsterdam. Founded in 1862, the small shops of Bloemenmarkt are housed inside a row of floating barges. Only a few now sell fresh flowers, but you’ll also find small shops where you can pick up Dutch souvenirs.

When buying flowers in the city, we like to visit one of our favourite local, independent florists. Bloemenweelde Amsterdam is a great little shop that offers a friendly and personal service.

You should be aware that the right months to buy real tulip bulbs in Amsterdam are September, October and November. Steer clear of anyone trying to sell you bulbs at other times. Many reputable gardening websites even sell bulbs online and will deliver them in time for planting season.

4. Visit the flower fields

See the fields near Amsterdam in all their colourful glory as hundreds of thousands of tulips come into bloom

The Tulip Fields around Amsterdam are a sight to behold come spring. The farmers tending to these vast fields are growing bulbs to be sold all around the world. The flowers themselves will not go to market, so they can be enjoyed for much longer. If you’re visiting Keukenhof, there is a place near the entrance where you can rent bikes. From here, you can tour the beautiful flower fields of the surrounding areas. Cycling is a great way to explore these areas as you can cover more ground than you would walking. Here’s one possible route you can take which will lead you past some of Amsterdam’s most gorgeous tulip fields.

We recommend visiting in the second half of April (but before the 30th, as they’ll be headed) for the most vibrant blooms. If you’d like to experience tulips up close in a more intimate setting, Tulip Farm De Tulperij, located about a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam, is another fantastic spot worth visiting.

If you’re visiting in winter, no need to miss out! There are special tours which take you behind the scenes of a tulip greenhouse where flowers are grown all year round.

When you visit is really up to you. Like Keukenhof though, we think that it’s nice to see flowers in the morning or early evening.

5. Watch the flower parade

Experience the colour and excitement of Bollenstreek, a flower themed parade that winds its way from Lisse to Haarlem

What better way to celebrate the Amsterdam Tulip Festival than with a big flower parade? Participants spend weeks building huge floats decorated with beautiful spring flowers. Come April, these impressive floats will wind their way past flower fields near Lisse, along Keukenhof boulevard and ending in the historic Dutch town of Haarlem.

This year Bollenstreek will be held on Saturday, 12th April. Thousands of locals and visitors alike will line the parade route to take in the spectacle.

Unless you’re planning to watch the parade from Keukenhof there’s no need to buy a ticket as the parade is free to watch. Along the route there are plenty of opportunities to grab food and drink and enjoy lots of other entertainment from musicians and street performers. What not to do during the Amsterdam Tulip Festival

1. Do not buy tulip bulbs during the Amsterdam Tulip Festival

You should be aware that the right months to buy real tulip bulbs in Amsterdam are September, October and November. Steer clear of anyone trying to sell you bulbs at other times.

However, if you do purchase any seeds or flower bulbs – only choose those which are packaged and pre approved for export, otherwise goods may be withheld by customs.

2. Do not walk through tulip fields or pick the flowers

Members of the public are not permitted to enter tulip fields or pick flowers, unless instructed to do so. However, if you’d like to create your own tulip bouquet, you can visit dedicated picking gardens, such as Hanneke’s Pluktuin (Ellerweg 18, Biddinghuizen) or the tulip picking garden of the Boerenshop (Steenwijkerweg 26, Marknesse).

3. Do not visit the fields after April 30th

If you want to see the tulips at their best at Keukenhof, don’t visit around April 30th or thereafter. The tulips are “headed,” meaning the flowers are removed. Removing the head makes the bulb stronger, which is the reason these are grown in the first place.

The Ultimate Guys’ Getaway in Amsterdam

So, after many evenings of planning, you and your pals finally managed to organise a group trip to Amsterdam. Nice one… and good choice might we add. With so much on offer, the Dutch capital is an ideal location for a guys’ getaway. There are loads of quirky nightclubs and trendy bars, as well as heaps of cafe’s, museums and restaurants… plenty to keep you and your band of boisterous boys busy!

But first… here’s a few tips for travelling as a group

  • Book restaurants and activities in advance where possible to avoid disappointment on the day. Amsterdam can get very busy at peak times, so if you want to make the most of a group trip then the best time to visit is April, May, early June, mid-September and mid-October
  • Avoid queuing in train stations and save some cash by booking a group travel card before you arrive

Night time activities in Amsterdam

Bars and Clubs

When it comes to a big night out in Amsterdam, there are endless places to party. The best thing about a night out in Amsterdam is the close proximity of all the bars, clubs and pubs. If you and your group are not feeling the vibes of a particular place there will be another bar, pub or club just around the corner, usually with a completely different feel!

Where to go?

The city has a few major nightlife districts, where the majority of partying takes place – the famous redlight districtRembrandtplein, Leidseplein. Simply punch these locations into your google maps if you’re feeling adventurous and try your luck once you arrive. These areas are loaded with quirky bars, pubs and night clubs, and are a good place to kick off your guys’ night out! If you prefer a plan, or are in a larger group and don’t fancy spending all night trying to track down your mates, then we recommend heading to one of the below locations:

Big Clubs

If you are looking for cutting-edge electronic tunes, multi-tiered dance floors and more glowsticks than you could possibly imagine then head Melkweg, EscapeWarehouse Elementenstraat, Air Amsterdam, or Paradiso. Here the party-goers flock in their thousands.

Top tip: Some big names visit these venues so make sure you have a look online before you go to book tickets!

Quirky places

As with any big city, there are certain areas that can be a little bit too touristy. Check out our guide on how to avoid tourist traps here. If you’re after a more authentic Dutch night out and like to go against the grain, we recommend heading to Vondelbunker, Shelter, Sexyland, or De School.

Top Tip: Shelter is a very cool venue, it is like something out of the Matrix. It is hidden away underground and it is just a short walk away from ClinkNOORD

2024 Amsterdam Tourist Tax: All there is to know!

How will the Amsterdam Tourist Tax affect you?

On January 1st 2024, the city of Amsterdam implemented a 12.5% city tax. This means you will have to part with a bit more cash, but don’t let the new tax get you down. In many ways, it’s a good thing – paying a bit more tax will help make sure the city is clean and safe. The extra funding will also be put towards maintaining the city’s infrastructure, like bridges and canals.

How to pay the new Tax?

Please note that the city tax of Amsterdam will increase from 7% to 12.5% on 1 January 2024. For all stays in 2024, the price will be updated to reflect this change.

If you have any further questions please give us a call on +44 (0)20 7183 9400 or send us an email.

Check out the City of Amsterdam’s website for more info on the tourist tax

Amsterdam is well-known for being a city where the good times roll. It is, after all, Europe’s capital of hedonism. It cultivates an atmosphere for laughter and good times. Although many of the quirky shows, live music and bars can keep you entertained, another popular side of the city is its comedy clubs.

To a tourists’ surprise, watching a stand-up comedy in Amsterdam doesn’t have to be a problem. The language barrier is easily avoided as many of the venues we’ll discuss, offer comedy in English as well as Dutch. 15 Ridiculously Fun Things To Do With Your Friends In Amsterdam

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is a city bursting with activities and entertainment. Aside from the buzzing coffeeshops and the famous Red Light District, there are plenty more fun things to do with your friends and many things about Amsterdam that you should know about!

From Amsterdam’s friendship cruises, playing glow-in-the-dark mini-golf or riding the highest swing in Europe; there are lots of great group activities to get stuck into during your city break. Whether you’re enjoying a lads’ weekend in Amsterdam, are on a hen do or are simply exploring the Dutch capital on your travels, we’ve rounded up the 15 top things to do in Amsterdam with your friends.

1. Take a ride on Europe’s Highest Swing

Scared of heights? Look away now! Our first suggestion sits atop A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam Noord (just a minutes’ walk from ClinkNOORD). Branded as ‘Europe’s Highest Swing,’ this activity is not for the faint-hearted – but it is a whole lot of fun.

Grab your best friend, get strapped in and swing away, soaring over the city. If you can bear to open your eyes, the views are pretty spectacular too. You can see Amsterdam from a completely different perspective, soaking up the city’s culture in a unique way.

If you’re staying at ClinkNOORD, make sure to ask reception about our discounted tickets for the swing.

2. Cruise like kings with Pure Boats

If you’re tempted to take a canal cruise whilst you’re in the city, you’ll want to gather a bunch of your mates and get in touch with Pure Boats. A tacky tourist boat this is not. You’ll be welcomed on board a boutique vessel by a fun and knowledgeable captain, so you can sail the Dutch streets in style.

Plus, if you want to make the trip extra special, you can sample some of the drinks and snacks from lovely local suppliers. A 90-minute trip is 250 EUR which works out at just over 20 EUR if you bring 11 friends. Alternatively, you can jump on a shared cruise with a group of like-minded explorers.

Visiting Amsterdam as a group? Book your dorm room at ClinkNOORD!

3. Go street art hunting

Amsterdam is a hotbed of creativity and there are lots of places in the city where you can check out some incredible street art. Hit the road with your friends, armed with your camera of course, and go sightseeing!

Our favourite place for street art is just a stone’s throw from ClinkNOORD at NDSM Werf. The area is a former industrial dockyard but in recent years it has become a hub for artists, musicians and creatives.

4. Tour the city by bike

Ok, this might seem like an obvious one but it has to be on the list because riding a bike around Amsterdam with friends is ridiculously fun. It may feel a little bit like you’re taking your life in your own hands, but once you’ve got used to the Dutch cyclists whizzing past you and the buzzy little mopeds, the sense of freedom and adventure is amazing.

We can’t get enough of Amsterdam Noord and through our very own bike tour, our guides love to show guests around the city. Ask the ClinnkNOORD reception team to see if the bike tour is running during your stay.

5. Hit a festival

Did you know that Amsterdam hosts over 300 festivals a year? That’s a hell of a lot to choose from. You’ll be sure to find something that suits your taste, may it be dancing, drinking, eating, artsy or business. Although, if you’re into music, what better way to spend a few days with your friends than dancing along to indie anthems and club bangers in the open air.

In the summer, we recommend taking a visit to either Valtifest and Mysteryland. As autumn creeps in, check out the Amsterdam Dance Event which sees more than 2,000 artists play across 80 city locations. For something different during the winter months, check out Valhalla which sees electro music and classic circus culture come together to create the ultimate clubbing experience.

6. Go bargain hunting at IJ Hallen

IJ-Hallen is a huge warehouse in Amsterdam Noord that plays host to Europe’s biggest flea market. If you and your friends are bargain hunters – welcome to your mecca. With two huge halls packed to the brim with vintage clothes, shoes, toys, tools and antiques, you can find pretty much anything you might be looking for.

Like any flea market, you’ll have to root through some junk but there are some real gems to be found. IJ Hallen is at NDSM Werf, just a 5-minute cycle ride from ClinkNOORD.

7. Head to the beach at Pllek

A beach? In Amsterdam?! Yes, you heard right. Of course, a beach is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Amsterdam but let us highly recommend “The Beach” at Pllek where you can sit on the banks of the River IJ and take in the views across the city.

Pllek is a music, arts and events venue that also serves up some pretty tasty food and drink. On a sunny day, it offers lots of great things to do with your friends. Grab an ice-cold drink, pull up a deckchair on their man-made beach and sit socialising in the Sun. When the weather isn’t so fine, hunker down inside and enjoy the view out of the huge windows that look out onto the ‘beach’ and across the river.

8. Hail the disco taxi

The disco taxi, as the name suggests, is everything you’d hope for and more. Often the way people get hyped up for a night out is dancing in your lift to the bars and clubs. If you and your friends are wandering the streets of Amsterdam and the disco taxi swings by, hail it immediately and strap in for the best ride of your life.

With disco lights, the hottest charts playing and a singing driver, it’s an experience like no other. If you’re not lucky enough to stumble across this dream vehicle, take fate into your own hands and give them a call on 0654698187. This is a great activity if you’re on a stag or hen party in Amsterdam.

There’s not much that’s more fun than being with your friends and eating lots of delicious Dutch food. There are lots of tours out there so just shop around until you find one that feels like a fit to your tastebuds. Popular Dutch cuisine that you should be on your checklist to try includes Bitterballen, Stroopwafels, Thick Dutch fries, Oliebollen, Poffertjes and Tompouce.

If you and your friends are looking for some entertainment that’s off the tourist trail, then head to the Vondelbunker. Find the bunker in the ‘blink-and-you’d-miss-it’ foundation of the bridge which crosses the top of Vondelpark. It’s an old WW2 bunker converted into a 60’s hippie hangout.

The Vondelbunker is the perfect spot for anyone after underground culture and experimental vibes. Expect a mix of live music, art exhibitions, theatre, and film screenings in a totally non-commercial, DIY atmosphere. This place isn’t about fancy venues or touristy spots, it’s about art, activism, and independent expression. Keep an eye on their socials for the next event, or just swing by to see what’s going on.

Eat Like A Local In Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city jam-packed with restaurants, street food stalls and takeaways – it’s certainly not short of places to dine. But where is best to go I hear you ask?! Check out our selection of the best restaurants in Amsterdam, which compiles some of the most quaint, unheard of gems within the Dam food scene. From eclectic Thai restaurants to the best cheese fondue, we’ve got you covered. Sit back and indulge – literally!

1. Rakang

Rakang has been around for a long time (since 1994 to be exact!) and for very good reason. This cosy Jordan restaurant is a real favourite with the Amsterdam locals thanks to its authentic Thai flavours based around three core pillars: simplicity of dishes, fresh ingredients and vibrant flavours. Colourful and contemporary artwork adorns the walls and Eastern-inspired crockery fills the tables. Favourite dishes with the locals include the thom kha kai soup along with the beef tenderloin in oyster sauce and the fried prawns with curry powder and fiery red chillies.

2. Miss Korea BBQ

All you can eat restaurants can often conjure up visions of unappetising mountains of buffet food. Not so at Miss Korea BBQ. Here, diners sit around a table with an inset barbecue at its centre and cook their own sizzling dinner, choosing from seasoned beef, pork belly, squid, prawns and veg. It doesn’t get much fresher than that. Ingredients are unlimited but there is a penalty for uneaten food in a bid to minimise wastage. It’s a great social spot to head to with a group of friends (old or new!) You can spend a good few hours chatting whilst you cook up a storm. If you’re looking for some of the best restaurants in Amsterdam to eat like locals, you could do worse than Miss Korea BBQ.

3. De Zuid

As a mostly residential area, Java Island isn’t well known to most visitors coming to Amsterdam. A pleasant walk from Centraal Station along the recently developed IJ Waterfront, this small island boasts some impressive modern architecture and great views overlooking the city. It’s certainly worth a visit if you’re looking to venture off the tourist track. De Zuid is a hidden gem and one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam, well-loved by locals. With friendly, smiling staff and a no-fuss atmosphere, this cosy pub does a delectable cheese fondue and has a great selection of Belgian beers. Once you’re finished, take a stroll across the street. Once you approach the water, head towards some giant concrete steps where you’ll get a beautiful view across the water to the city.

If you often feel overwhelmed with the sheer choice of menus these days, then Sir Pita could well be the place for you. Located in the trendy De Pijp district, this local-favourite restaurant serves just one thing … You guessed it: hummus! Here at Sir Hummus, the well-loved chickpea dip is more than something to eat with a crisp or spread in a sandwich. It forms the basis of a whole dish. Served slightly warm with fresh herbs, a spicy sauce, pitta bread and a side salad, it’s a hearty and healthy lunch that really hits the spot. Add meat or mushrooms if you’re feeling particularly peckish.

5. Drovers Dog

Aussies know how to do brunch and this place is absolute proof of that. Banging Bloody Marys, proper coffee and a cracking selection of brekkie dishes, this is a spot that Amsterdam locals return to again and again. The atmosphere, as you’d expect from a place run by Australians, is super relaxed. So, if you’re looking for a leisurely way to spend a few hours – with friends or with a book or pile of newspapers – head to Drovers Dog. Brunch is our favourite here, but they do dinner too and we wouldn’t turn our nose up at that either. So popular is Drovers Dog, they’ve now got two other locations in the city.

6. Hotel de Goudfazant

If you’re visiting Amsterdam for a special occasion, we’d heartily recommend a visit to Hotel de Goudfazant. Unlike its name suggests, this is not a hotel but rather a restaurant in an old industrial warehouse in Amsterdam Noord (not so far from ClinkNOORD youth hostel). The space manages to feel grand yet cosy with an impressive chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. For just €31.50 you can enjoy a three-course set menu which generally comprises classic French-inspired dishes. Tables are filled mainly with groups of Dutch friends, families and couples so if you’re looking for the best restaurants in Amsterdam to eat like a local, Hotel de Ghoudfazant is a ‘ghoud’ bet.

With a proper wood-fired oven and the feel of a chic Italian cafeteria, this is the perfect spot to enjoy crispy, authentic pizza and a nice bottle of red. Plus, as the pizzas are light to eat, we’re quite sure you’ll have room for one of Yam Yam’s famous gelatos to finish off your dinner the proper Italian way.
